THE ART OF MAKING ESPADRILLES BY HAND
Macarena Heritage
Handmade espadrilles
Made in Spain since 1996
At Macarena Shoes, every pair of espadrilles It tells a story of passion, tradition, and commitment. A story that is conveyed in every stitch, from the first sketch to the final product. More than just an accessory, each shoe is a testament to timeless elegance combined with a deep social and environmental responsibility.
Our story began in 1996, building upon the foundations of a family business founded in the 1970s in Arnedo, La Rioja, a city with a long shoemaking tradition in Spain. With the vision of reinventing the traditional espadrille, Macarena was born with a clear purpose: to offer handcrafted footwear that combined contemporary sophistication with Spanish artisanal heritage. Since then, our products have been manufactured entirely in Arnedo, keeping local tradition alive with a modern and sustainable approach.
The heart of Macarena lies in its artisanal process. Each pair of shoes is the result of meticulous work that begins with the responsible selection of natural and sustainable materials: biodegradable jute, certified organic cotton, and chrome-free leather. For our winter collections and home footwear , we opt for ethical alternatives such as vegan synthetic fur.
We choose each component prioritizing local and national sources—with the exception of a few select Italian materials—to ensure quality, support the circular economy, and minimize our carbon footprint. This philosophy allows us to create durable, comfortable, and stylish espadrilles, designed to accompany you season after season.
The real difference lies in our workshops in Arnedo, where a team of over 50 artisans—many with decades of experience—transforms these materials into unique pieces. Making a single pair of espadrilles can take up to 50 days and involve 15 specialized artisans. Every cut, every hand-stitch, every assembly reflects the respect for the craft and the time required to achieve excellence in footwear made in Spain.

SUSTAINABLE FOOTWEAR WITH A PURPOSE
Sustainability at Macarena isn't a trend: it's the guiding principle behind our decisions. From designing long-lasting products free from planned obsolescence to choosing recyclable and biodegradable materials, our commitment to the planet is present at every stage of the manufacturing process.
We work closely with workshops that guarantee fair and safe working conditions because we understand that sustainability must include both environmental impact and the well-being of people. This vision extends beyond the product: since 2017, we have organized the Fiesta Macarena, a charity event that supports educational and health projects in Ethiopia as part of our corporate social responsibility.
